Second Call for Proposals for CSCL 2019 June 17-21

A wide lens: Combining Embodied, Enactive, Extended, and Embedded Learning in Collaborative Settings.
 
Promoting productive collaborative interaction in varied contexts requires studying the interdependencies of the complex ecosystems in which collaborative learning takes place (e.g. school, museums, work, play). In Cognitive Science, research under the banner of 4E cognition favors newer paradigms that take into account the role of the body (embodied), the interactions between an organism and its environment (enactive), and the elements and aspects in the environment itself (extended and embedded). At this year’s CSCL, we propose 4E learning as our theme. Submissions that present results on collaborative learning regarding some combination of embodied, enactive, extended, and embedded learning are welcome. Such a focus translates to studies of various interdependencies in the learning process: social, emotional, cultural, linguistic, cognitive, and technological. Finally, treating 4E learning as inherently collaborative means that as a CSCL community, we need to understand this phenomenon in settings both with and without technology. It is important that as CSCL researchers, we build on work that while not computer-supported has implications for design and research in computer-supported collaborative learning settings. In considering collaborative learning as the interplay of factors in a complex system, we aim to create novel interdisciplinary integrations and thereby extend and reinforce the CSCL Learning Sciences community with new ideas.

  Papers, Posters, and Symposia

CSCL 2019 will offer a variety of publication formats, including full papers, short papers, posters, and symposia. Full papers are limited to 8 pages, short papers are limited to 4 pages, poster abstracts are limited to 2 pages, and symposium proposals are limited to 8 pages. Submissions must follow the formatting instructions of their respective submission category. All papers will be subjected to peer review by an international program committee. The Program Committee reserves the right to determine whether a submitted paper is accepted for presentation as a long paper, short paper, or poster. All accepted papers and posters will be published in the proceedings.
 
Full Papers (8 pages): Full papers are for mature work, requiring lengthy explanations of the conceptual background, methodology and data and analysis. Full paper submissions should state: (a) the major issue(s) addressed, (b) potential significance of the work, (c) the theoretical and methodological approach(es) pursued, (d) major findings, conclusions, implications, and (e) relevant scholarly references.
 
Short Papers (4 pages): Short papers are for work that makes significant contributions, but that is still in progress, of smaller scale, or that can be reported briefly. Otherwise, the same criteria apply as listed for full papers above.
 
Posters (2 pages): Posters are for work in early stages and for novel and promising ideas. The two-page abstract should identify the aspect of the work that will likely lead to productive discussions with conference participants in a poster session, including figures exemplifying the visual support to be provided for these discussions in the poster.
 
Symposia (8 pages): Symposia are for conveying larger ideas or results about a specific issue. Discussion among members of the symposium and with the audience should be moderated to focus on certain positions or controversies. It is not sufficient for a symposium to simply be a set of related papers, such as papers from a specific research group. Rather, symposia proposals should and will be evaluated on their capacity to address larger issues of interest to the CSCL community.
 
A clear description should be provided of:

• The overall focus of the symposium
• The major issues addressed or overarching/integrative points illustrated by the collective work
• How the collective presentations contribute towards the issues or points raised
• The significance of the contributions
• Separate, brief descriptions of the content of each presentation should be included in the 8-page submission

• The submission system for submission of full and short papers, posters and symposia is located at https://new.precisionconference.com/cscl.
• Submissions should be written in English and follow the current version of the ISLS author guidelines (there is also a Microsoft Word template).
• Papers and posters will be reviewed blind. Please prepare your papers accordingly see the Word template for suggestions).
• Symposia are not reviewed blind, please include author information in the proposal.
• Submission Deadline: 11:59pm Pacific Standard Time (GMT-8), extended to November 19, 2018.
• January 31st, 2019 – Notification of acceptance
• February 15th, 2019 – Submission of the final short, long, papers, and symposia for publication in conference proceedings
